Sarba is a Romanian white grape variety created at the Odobesti Viticulture and Winemaking Research Station, in the historic wine region of Vrancea.

Originally regarded as semi-aromatic, the variety reveals a surprisingly expressive perfume, with characteristic notes of rose petals, white flowers and ripe fruit.

Its natural freshness and lively acidity complement aromas of peach, citrus and exotic fruit, producing bright, fragrant wines particularly attractive when enjoyed young.

THE GRAPE

Sarba was developed at the Odobesti Viticulture and Winemaking Research Station and has become one of the distinctive modern varieties of Romanian viticulture. Today, approximately 320 hectares are planted with Sarba, concentrated primarily in the southern part of the Moldova wine region, particularly in Vrancea.

Its aromatic personality combines floral notes reminiscent of roses and white blossoms with fresh fruit aromas such as peach, green apple, pear and citrus. In warmer vintages, more exotic nuances can emerge, while the variety's naturally vibrant acidity preserves freshness and balance.

Some of the most representative expressions come from the historic vineyards of Odobesti, Cotesti and Panciu, where Sarba has become closely associated with the contemporary identity of Vrancea's white wines.

Sarba is used both for varietal wines and in blends, where its fragrance can add aromatic lift and complexity. Its combination of expressive fruit, floral character and acidity also makes it suitable for fresh sparkling wines. Most examples are intended to be enjoyed relatively young, when the variety's distinctive aromatic character is at its most vivid.
