Grasa de Cotnari
Grasa de Cotnari
A historic Romanian grape renowned for rich, naturally sweet wines
Grasa de Cotnari is one of Romania's historic white grape varieties, closely associated with the celebrated Cotnari Vineyard in Moldova.
It is particularly prized for naturally sweet wines from late-harvested grapes, combining remarkable richness and concentration with complexity and excellent ageing potential.
Grasa de Cotnari in Romania
Grasa de Cotnari is cultivated on approximately 546 hectares in Romania, with the largest concentration in the Cotnari Vineyard. The variety is deeply connected with the history and identity of this celebrated Moldovan wine-growing area.
Smaller plantings can also be found in the Pietroasa wine-growing area of Dealu Mare, where suitable conditions allow the variety to achieve high levels of ripeness and concentration.
Grasa de Cotnari is best known for naturally sweet wines produced from grapes harvested at advanced ripeness, sometimes after partial raisining and the development of noble rot. These wines can show considerable extract, glycerol and body while retaining enough acidity to provide balance and freshness.
Young wines often display greenish-yellow to golden tones and a distinctive aromatic profile with dried apricot, raisins, honey, beeswax and nutty nuances. With bottle age, the wines can develop additional complexity, making Grasa de Cotnari one of Romania's most distinctive traditional varieties for rich sweet wines.
