In Romania, approximately 586 hectares are planted with Gewurztraminer. Although considerably less widespread than some of the country's major white varieties, it has adapted successfully to several Romanian wine-growing environments.

Important plantings can be found in Transylvania, where cooler conditions help preserve freshness and aromatic definition. The contrast between warm days and cooler nights can favour the development of the intense floral and exotic fruit aromas for which the variety is renowned.

Gewurztraminer is also cultivated in Moldova and Dobrogea, where different climatic conditions and soils offer alternative expressions of the variety, from fresher and more floral wines to richer, broader and more generous styles.

Romanian Gewurztraminer wines are typically medium- to full-bodied, with a soft, sometimes almost velvety texture. Lychee, rose, ripe tropical fruit and spice dominate the aromatic profile, while notes of peach, citrus and honey may appear depending on ripeness and winemaking style.

The variety can be vinified from dry to sweet, with late-harvest and dessert styles offering particularly intense aromatic complexity. Gewurztraminer may also be used in blends, where even a relatively small proportion can contribute fragrance, richness and an unmistakably exotic character.
