Oporto

A distinctive Portuguese red variety with a small presence in Romania

Red International 228 ha

Oporto is a red grape variety valued for its deep colour, concentration and firm structure, producing expressive wines with considerable depth and ageing potential.

Its aromatic profile combines dark fruit with floral, herbal and spicy notes, sometimes developing subtle nuances of cocoa and chocolate.

THE GRAPE

Oporto in Romania

In Romania, Oporto is cultivated on approximately 228 hectares, representing only a small part of the country's vineyard area. The variety has been planted in warmer sites where it can achieve the ripeness and concentration required for high-quality red wines.

Important areas include the hills of Muntenia, the Iasi Vineyard and selected vineyards in western Romania.

Romanian producers generally use the variety for structured, premium red wines, either as a component in blends or, more rarely, as a varietal wine. Its naturally firm tannins and concentrated fruit can contribute depth, colour and ageing potential.

Production remains limited, making Romanian examples relatively rare. Where vineyard conditions and yields are carefully managed, however, Oporto can produce distinctive wines with considerable personality.
